I’m Kerry Postel, the heart and brains behind Abacus Business Solutions, a company that’s been steadily expanding over the past twelve years. Driven by a profound desire to empower business owners in understanding and trusting their financial numbers, Abacus has become much more than just a business; it’s a testament to passion meeting purpose. My journey to the world of accountancy wasn’t etched from the start. As a youth, the future seemed like a giant question mark until a serendipitous introduction to business and finance during my higher national diploma course in England struck a chord within me. This was followed by a pivotal leap—work experience in my mother’s accounts department. There, amidst ledgers and figures, I discovered a passion for numbers.

My venture into full-fledged bookkeeping began humbly as a purchase ledger clerk, transferring to a role that immersed me in the luxurious world of high-end jewelry accounting. The manual rigor of double-entry bookkeeping, debits and credits, began to paint a picture of the intricate symphony that is balanced books. Forget the automated illusion that software like Quickbooks may portray; there’s an art to the numbers.

From there, my path took a detour through the sales industry—an illuminating experience that reinforced my affinity for accounting. Before long, I was absorbed in the construction sector, steeped in AIA invoices, progress billing, and job costing. Six invaluable years cultivating a thorough comprehension of construction accounting laid the foundations for Abacus’ niche specialty.

Abacus launched in 2013 on the premise of support—aiding businesses in navigating the sometimes treacherous waters of financial clarity. And it’s not just about maintaining books for tax returns; it’s about fostering an environment where businesses can pinpoint their victories and vulnerabilities. It’s about strategy—implementing techniques like the Profit First management approach, which insists on an owner’s deserved earnings and systematized profitability.

Remember 2020? The year that tested the resilience of companies worldwide? While on a flight back to the States amidst the unfolding global pandemic, doubt clouded my mind over Abacus’ fate. Yet, astonishingly, the year unfolded to be our most successful to that point, setting a new precedent for growth each subsequent year.

But success isn’t just revenues and statistics; it’s realization and action—it’s understanding why the $70,000 profit shown on your P&L statement isn’t reflected in your bank account and rectifying that disconnect. It’s about guiding owners to rightly compensate themselves—to fuel the vigor that powers the enterprise.

There’s a common resistance I encounter with clients concerning taxes; the dread is palpable. But my ethos is simple: to pay taxes is to be profitable. Harmony lies in strategizing with tax professionals, ensuring that profitability doesn’t equate to excessive tax liabilities.
